A Brief History of the WoT RP

The Wheel of Time Role-Play began in spring of 2000 when I decided to upload some files so friends could see “what I was working on.” The site launched officially in June, and while we had a bit of a rocky start, in a few months we were happily working away and greatly enjoying ourselves. I was 12 turning 13 in 2000, and the site definitely began without my parents’ permission. Oops! Fortunately, they let me keep on with it once I did tell them. Ten years later, I find myself pitter-pattering at the keyboard once again, figuring out how to set up join forms and getting things off the ground once more. I’m pretty sure my parents are okay with it this time, though!

At its peak in about 2004, the Wheel of Time Role-Play was one of the biggest RPs out there about the Wheel of Time. We had over 150 people writing for over 250 characters, and an administration team of 12 people from around the world. (Scheduling a meeting so that people from west & east North America, Europe, and Australia could all attend? I don’t know how we did it.) There were members who we loved, members we hated, some that were just pains in the derriere. Fortunately, a lot of those grew out of it, and some of them even became administrators (we call them Officers) themselves. Yes, you know who you are.

Everything has its hay day, the good ol’ times, and whatnot, and these always have to come to an end. In 2007, I was in the midst of university, about to travel, and the other Officers were in similar positions–new demanding jobs, marriages, their own schooling, and so on. For many reasons, it was time to close the WoT RP, and move on with our lives for a little while. It was a peaceful farewell to the site, but the friendships we built at the site have lasted. We’ve been to weddings with each other, met our future spouses, and found great roommates from the site. So in some ways, it never died at all.

Is died even the right word? Probably not, because here the site is, living and breathing again. We put it to sleep, more like. So, here is the Wheel of Time Role-Play once again: reimagined, reinvigorated, reinvented. Ready to get back to making some memories.
