Board Terminology & How-To

Message Board: a virtual bulletin board, on which you post posts, reply to posts, and role-play or interact with other members.

Post: the bulletin you put up on the Message Board, or the act of putting up a bulletin. (Posting, Posted, etc.)

String: a series of posts beneath one another on the Message Board; a post with several replies.

1. Near the top of the Message Board, click on the button, "Post an Article."

2. This will take you to a page with four white text boxes. Fill these in with your character's name and rank (or your name on the OOC board), your email address (make sure it's visible to others!), and the title of your post.

3. The big text box is either titled "Message" or "Post." The 16 KB maximum is approximately equal to four pages of 12 pt Times New Roman. This is where your post goes. (Keep reading for more info about what posts must contain.) The smallest box, asking if you want to show your email address, is mandatory - we use this for identification purposes. Just click it.

4. So now you've written a post! Beneath the biggest text box, there are two grey buttons titled, "Submit Article," and "Return to Articles." If you like your post, press the "Submit Article" button, and it will automatically take you back to the main board, where your post with your title, name, and email address will show up. If you don't like your post and want to return to the Message Board, click on the "Return to Articles" button, and it will erase your post and take you back to the board.

Questions to ask yourself before you post:

  1. Are both my character's name and rank included?

  2. Have I included and shown my email address?

  3. Is my title spelt correctly?

  4. Is my IC post 300 words long? Have I checked it for proper spelling, grammar, and are all HTML tags closed? Does it follow WoT RP guidelines?

  5. (For OOC posts) Have I included my characters along with my real name?

Posting Rules

It is very important that you follow these rules at all times; if you don't, your post could be deleted. Section 5 of the rules goes over all of these points in expansive detail - go there if you would like to read more. Also, these are the rules you are to follow out of character; the content of your posts is subject to other guidelines and standards.

  • Posts are to be 300 words minimum at all times and should be spell- and grammar-checked, with proper punctuation.

  • Paragraphs are to be double-spaced.

  • Thoughts and emphasized words should be in italics; other HTML formatting should be kept to a minimum for ease of reading.

  • Posts are to be kept to a PG13 rating at all times - if they exceed this, they must have a clear disclaimer.

  • OOC posts on IC boards will be deleted.

  • Only post where your character's rank allows you. The table is as follows:

Rank Board Status
Everyone All members of any rank may post on the Out of Character (OOC), Out of Character Lesson Board (OOC LB), and the Critique Board (CB).
Novices May post on the Novice & Accepted board, Novice Lesson Board, Special RP Board, the Raising Board (if it's their raising), and White Tower Board without permission. May post on the Gaidin in Training Lesson Board if there is a Dance lesson.
Accepted May post on the Novice & Accepted board, Accepted Lesson Board, Novice Lesson Board, Special RP Board, the Raising Board (if it's their raising) and White Tower Board without permission. Are allowed to post on the Within the Wheel board if they have gained permission for a trip out of Tower. May post on the GiT Lesson Board if attending a lesson (for which you will have to get permission to attend).
Aes Sedai May post on all boards, excepting the Pattern Societies Board - RP's that would be held there should be conducted on the Within the Wheel board. Posts in the Black Tower and on the GiT boards should be kept to a minimum. (Go Warder hunting on the WT board, not on the GiT.)
Soldiers May post on the Soldier & Dedicated Board, the Black Tower Lesson Board, the Black Tower Board, and Special RP Board. If they are on an excursion with an Asha'man or BT Officer, they may then post on the Within the Wheel board.
Dedicated May post on the Soldier & Dedicated Board, the Black Tower Lesson Board, the Black Tower Board, and Special RP board. If they're on an excursion with an Asha'man or BT Officer, they may then post on the Within the Wheel board.
Asha'man May post on all boards, excepting the Pattern Societies Board - RP's that would be held there should simply be conducted on the Within the Wheel board. Posts in other sections should be kept to a minimum.
Aethan'Tar May post on the Gaidin in Training Board, the Gaidin in Training Lesson Board, the White Tower Board, the Special RP Board, and the Raising Board. Might be allowed to post on one of the White Tower Lesson Boards if they are assisting in a lesson, but permission must be gained first.
Sei'Tar May post on the Gaidin in Training Board, the Gaidin in Training Lesson Board, the White Tower Board, the Special RP Board, and the Raising Board. Might be allowed to post on one of the White Tower Lesson Boards if they are assisting in a lesson, but permission must be gained first.
Gaidin May post on all boards, excepting the Pattern Societies Board - RP's that would be held there should simply be conducted on the Within the Wheel board. Posts in the Black Tower and on the Novice & Accepted boards should be kept to a minimum. (Those RP's should be held on the WT board.)
Pattern Societies May post on the Pattern Societies Board, Within the Wheel, the White Tower Board, the Black Tower Board, and the Full Rank Board (if that character is full rank). May post other places, but permission must be gained first.

OOC Board Usage

A few simple rules to follow; these are also covered in Section 5 of the rules.

  • Proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar is to be used on the OOC board at all time - no chat room slang whatsoever.

  • Keep all discussions to something site, writing, or Wheel of Time related; other strings will be deleted without notice.

  • Leave of Absence notifications are to be emailed to your section leaders, not posted on the OOC board. (Officers are the only exception, as we'd have to email too many people.)

  • Matters concerning only one or two other people should be conducted over email, not on the OOC board. If you're looking for a missing person, try emailing the Officers first.

  • Always check the box that says "display email address," so we know who you are and how we may contact you.

  • Include a short list of the characters and their ranks in your signature, also for purposes of identification.

Removing Ads From Boards

Initially, we chose Server.com as our board hosting company because their boards had minimal advertisements and we liked their layout and accessibility. While we still like their layout & functionality, the ads have become rather pesky. Browsers have started making attempts at cutting down the number of pop-ups, and some actually work really well - the trick is finding the right one.

By installing Mozilla Firefox, a web browser very similar to Internet Explorer, your boards will go from looking like this to looking like the picture below it.

Internet Explorer:

Mozilla Firefox:

Much nicer, oui? You may or may not have heard about Firefox; basically, it's another browsing program like Internet Explorer or Netscape (though it's designed to operate a lot more like Explorer). Firefox is made by Mozilla, and is free for download from their website. It has a few really great features on its own, such as tabbed browsing, a built-in "find" window, and it integrates fully with your Internet Explorer (IE) bookmarks & settings. It's incredibly easy to make the switch from IE to Firefox (in fact, they have a whole page on it right here). If you want it, head over to their website and check out what they have to say. As far as downloading it goes, use their instructions as appropriate for your computer.

Firefox by itself is quite effective at removing ads; however, with two additional extensions you can remove virtually all internet advertisements. These extensions are provided by Mozilla itself, not an external site, so you don't need to fear about downloading something untrustworthy.

Mozilla's Firefox Extensions can be found here: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox. The two that work best together are 'Adblock' and 'Nuke Anything Enhanced' (you may have to do a quick search within extensions to find Nuke Anything Enhanced). Once you download those and install them into Firefox (follow instructions on the website), you're ready to start destroying ads - right-click on images, iFrames, Flash, or pesky JavaScript and hit the "Remove this object" option. Or, in the bottom right-hand corner, you'll be able to see an Adblock option; if you click that, you'll see a list of all blockable content on that page. Used together, these two extensions will remove ads from any page you surf.

We hope you enjoy your ad-free version of the Wheel of Time RP boards. :)
