Aes Sedai Writing Structures

In order to keep people writing for characters after they’ve been raised to Aes Sedai, the White Tower Officers have constructed a structure for Aes Sedai to follow. These are not requirements—simply a structure which you are welcome to follow to have a bit of direction. It is meant to help guide you through your character’s development into a mature Aes Sedai. This is, of course, just the bare minimum for writing—you are encouraged to go above and beyond what we have here! You’ve done the work to become Aes Sedai, so now is when you get to enjoy your rank and its privileges.

The Incentives:

  • To become fourth rank, and gain consideration for positions such as Sitter, Ajah Head, and so forth
  • One extra common Talent may be acquired by a fourth rank character

The Structure:

Interactive (3): Any topic with any other PC (not MUC) character.

Lessons (2): For any student (one or many, any section), student(s) must receive credit.

Get Settled RP: Your character emerges from their Testing—what now? How do they feel? What do their rooms look like? What’s on their agenda? During this RP, your character settles into being Aes Sedai.

Ajah Assignment RP: New Aes Sedai often get assignments from their Ajahs. What do you get? (Develop a new cure, write a thesis, go under cover, run a debate, etc.)

Develop Channeling Abilities RP: Aes Sedai are still learning about the One Power. Discover something new, learn a new weave, or work on a weakness. This would be a good place to work on the weaves required to receive your new Talent. (Remember to email a WT Officer stating which Talent your character will be working towards.)

Develop Non-channeling Abilities RP: Life isn’t all about the One Power—what else is your character learning? This could be anything: research, herb collecting, learning a weapon, cooking, horse riding, etc.

Trip out of the Tower RP: Go somewhere, meet some new people, see some new places, broaden your character’s perspective—and be useful while you’re at it.

Develop Position in Ajah RP: Mature Aes Sedai have their own niche, created by themselves through their own skills. Use your connections in (and out of) the Tower to get what you want. Power hungry? Now’s the time to climb.

Major RP: More of a cumulative RP than a ‘major’ one. Demonstrate that your character is a mature Aes Sedai secure in their position or on their way to where they want to be. If you are approved to gain a position within your Ajah, this is a major string chronicling the events which lead to your character being raised.

Notes:

  • Role-plays are minimum of 5000 words and posts should have above 500 words each. All must have conclusions (as in, no hanging endings).
  • One RP may only fulfill one credit.
  • You are welcome to complete role-plays with other characters, so long as the string has a conclusion and you write at least the minimum number of words.
  • Keep in mind that these role-plays will take place over one to many decades of your character’s life. You should develop some sort of trend so that these RPs fit into a larger scheme.

Role-plays do not have to be completed in order (you could take a trip out of the Tower before developing your non-channeling abilities, for example), though logical sense should be followed (get settled in your Ajah before you get an assignment, get an assignment before you develop your position, etc.). The major RP, however, is your final RP before becoming fourth rank.

Don’t be afraid to vie for power within your Ajah. Politics are good! Get involved, be nosy, make real connections between other characters and call on those connections when you want something. Setting yourself up for responsibility paves the path to gaining responsibility. (Just remember to keep it realistic—you don’t always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need. Ahem.)

About Gaining a Talent

As you noticed, one of the benefits of completing the Aes Sedai structure and becoming fourth rank is that your character will gain a new common Talent. Common Talents include: Healing, Illusion, Concealment, Cloud Dancing, Wave Dancing, and Earth Singing. It is generally accepted that all characters can perform at least a small amount of these Talents without actually possessing the Talent; for example, changing the colour of something using basic Illusion, or Healing minor bruises and cuts. It is necessary that you email the White Tower Officers with your Talent goal before you begin to work on gaining the Talent.

The new Talent that your character gains will not be one of their major Talents, but a Talent that they gained after hard work, practise, experience, and finally gaining their full potential with the One Power (which does not happen until they have been Aes Sedai for several years). This Talent will not be something that your character is naturally good at, but something they have become adequate-to-proficient at performing. Remember, you will not suddenly gain an aptitude for something they have struggled with for the previous years.

To truly deserve your Talent, you will need to sufficiently demonstrate in character (that is, in writing) that your character’s abilities with that Talent’s weaves have increased. This should be done in their Develop Channeling Abilities RP, and carried consistently throughout the other RP’s. In total, this should roughly equal another Talent lesson (minimum 2000 words).

Enjoy your writing! Remember to email one of the White Tower Officers when you have finished a string, or with any questions that you might have.

Fourth Rank Structures

To further the full rank development within the White Tower, those members who have worked hard with their characters and fulfilled the 4th Rank Requirements have the option of attaining a rank of authority within their Ajah (i.e. Head of Eyes and Ears, Sitter, Ajah Head, etc.). These positions would be open to only those who have fulfilled all 4th Rank requirements within the Ajah, yet with that effort, will be rewarded with special intra-Ajah IC and OOC responsibilities and duties that would place them a step above other Full Rank or even 4th Rank members.

What kind of stuff will you get to do?

Accountable to the Amyrlin and Keeper, the basis of the duties of anyone attaining these ranks within their Ajah would be to assist the Officers in keeping track of members within the Ajah, their activity and to help promote and incite posting among the members. Those who petition for an Ajah Head position would have expanded duties such as:

  • Being a point of contact for minor questions/permission on slightly questionable RP’s
  • Perform activity checks for all members of Ajah—inactive members not responding to emails are then forwarded to the Amyrlin and Keeper for appropriate action
  • Working with other Ajah Heads and possibly other sections for member interaction occasionally
  • Keeping Ajah members updated on Ajah related items through regular emails or even Newsletters if they choose (dependent on member preferences)

Other duties that 4th rank members in positions of rank include:

  • Provide occasional structured RP’s to incite activity within Ajah
  • Continued and constant interaction between members in Ajah
  • Work with the MoN staff to help with finding teachers for lessons/AEPs for first and mid rank characters
  • Right to IC title for character with RPs and strings

It should be noted that these positions will be accountable to the White Tower Officers to maintain this contact with the other Ajah members. The purpose of making these positions open to the members is to provide assistance to the Officers in exciting activity within their section with new and creative ideas for activity and posting and those seeking these positions of rank should take that into heavy consideration before petitioning for a particular rank.

How will you attain this position?

  1. Any 4th Rank member can either petition to the Amyrlin and Keeper to fill a specific position, or be nominated to the position by another member of the same Ajah.
  2. So long as the 4th Rank member wishes for the position, a ballot will be cast and all White Tower Officers and members of the appropriate Ajah will vote the member into this position.
  3. If the majority rules in favor of the 4th Rank member, they will be required to write a string of at least 8,000 words writing of their rise into this position.

Those interested in seeking out a position should take into consideration the responsibilities that will be required of them when they attain it and that petitioning to a position does not guarantee that it will be awarded. It should also be kept in mind that the selection of a member into these positions are subjective, based on the member’s posting history, their responsibility as a member and their ability to interact well with others in their section to provide some leadership.

Logistics:

If you have any questions or concerns about this new system, email any one of the White Tower Officers and we will be happy to help you out.

The White Tower Officers will be monitoring your progress through these requirements, and Taryn will be recording your character’s progress in their biography. Please ensure that you have notified them as soon as your character has completed a requirement!
